Damn planet, out of whack. Damn humans, making a mess of things and becoming more and more pathetic. Damn existence, whose meaning we still haven’t grasped… Today our emotions are restless. Between bizarre dreams and muffled screams, we’re creating a bubbling playlist to exorcise our dark introspections.
To that end, we welcome The Bernadette Maries, a trio of artists from Brussels who have just released an intriguing debut album, somewhere between shoegaze and indie-pop which allows itself to vary the contrasts, to explore some areas of shadow, while also possessing a disarming and luminous lightness. The melodies are sometimes catchy, sometimes disturbing, but always refined. So today’s selection also plays on contrasts. In this 615 episode, you’ll find plenty to enjoy and challenge your curious ears.
Have a good listen.
The Bernadette Maries’s selection
Winter (feat. Sasami) – Good
Guy: ” I’m literally obsessed with this track. Everything falls into place, making it a perfect song: the two vocals, the sound, the repetition of the hook, the eerie feedback that comes and goes in the stereo, it’s mesmerizing and comforting. It was my gateway into Winter’s music, and it’s always a great pick when you’re by yourself late at night, walking in the city lights. “
Échec – Allégresse
Romain: ” I think what moves me most about music are those moments when harsh sounds, over-the-top productions, noise, clamour, and musical beauty come together and blend to create those moments of grace that tug at my heartstrings. One of these precious memories was gifted to me by the Brussels duo Echec during the release party for their EP at Cobra Jaune in Brussels. We had opened for them with my little noise band, and I had made sure not to listen to anything that was coming up so I could be surprised. Echec then delivered a set so deeply sincere that it left me in tears in the middle of the old bar at Gare du Midi. I’ve included their hit “Allégresse” because that’s the song that really hooked me back then, but be sure to also check out “Parasol,” the first single from their upcoming debut album. “
Full Body 2 – Fifty heaven
Daria: ” This track has been living in my head rent free. To be honest, picking just one song from their album was a pain because it’s all so good, but here we are. Heavy guitars, bold synth leads, discreet vocals - somehow chaotic and delicate at the same time. The whole album is this wild, seamlessly blended mix of d&b, shoegaze and digital glitching that just sounds like nothing else. There’s an unmistakable 90’s video game influence in there too which hits a nostalgic spot for me. I highly recommend watching their whole Audiotree Live, especially their rendition of sprite ocarina, it’s unreal. “

The Bernadette Maries – Interlude 02
Anto: ” It might seem strange to place an interlude here to introduce the work of a musical band, but this track is the one that caught my attention the most on the Bernadette Maries album. I love this contemplative theme. At first, you get the impression of hearing waves, like the rising tide, and then other elements come to mind, something raw, slow, tranquil… It could be the soundtrack of a tree growing and carving its place in the middle of a wild forest. I find that this track gives another dimension to the album, like the promise of something unexpected, something you only discover after listening to all the tracks… “
Deutshe Vita – Du læsst mich
Anto: ” Deutsche Vita is my little discovery of the moment. These two friends deliver a deliciously new wave pop sound with punk hints from the basement that I really love. So much so that I struggled to choose which track to share here. Nexte Voche, Wand, and Autogrill have long intrigued me, but that’ll have to wait for another time. Until then, seriously, go check out the music videos that accompany their songs. You’ll appreciate the stunning aesthetic, the characters who are as grotesque as they are captivating, and the unusual artistic direction. “
Men I Trust – I come with mud
Anto: ” Okay, let’s go for a little ballad in the middle of this turbulent selection, like a strange dream, both sweet and uncomfortable. I don’t quite understand the lyrics; it gives me the feeling of being trapped in a Twin Peaks-like universe, inexorably drawn into a murky dimension I didn’t choose. The kind of sound to listen to on a uncertain Sunday morning… “
Lambrini Girls – Big dick energy
Anto: ” To be perfectly honest, today’s episode was supposed to come out before the summer, and I’d already planned to include this energetic track, which I find emblematic of the Lambrini Girls’ world. It’s funny, it’s brutal, and it puts things back where they belong, without bothering with nuance. Since then, the artists have blown everything up! They’ve taken advantage of their appearances at some major European festivals to display antifascist positions that are as strong as they are vital, like here in France or there in Portugal. This has inevitably sparked some controversy, as if music had never been political… But in these troubled times, we have to speak the truth, perhaps shouting it louder than ever: FUCK THE FAR RIGHT, all around the world! ”
That’s all for today.
Thanks to Bernadette Maries for their selection and to Péji for this wonderful illustration.
